Dance your emotions with Kathakalia, by ARJUN RAINA

Kathakali is a 17th century Indian Dance Theater that uses dance, music, and elaborate costumes and make up and a hand gestural language of ‘Mudras’ to tell dramatic and powerful stories from the Mahabharata.

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

The focus of the introductory workshop will be on: Kathakali basic steps. Abhinaya: The art of expressing emotions by finding the physical form of each human emotion: Love anger desire disgust pride wonder laughter peace. Story telling through the language of hand gestures And dancing Kathakali!

For those interested Arjun will then be available for an ongoing one on one engagement.

ABOUT ARJUN

Arjun was trained as an actor at LAMDA [the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, U.K] and as a Kathakali dancer at the International Center for Kathakali [New Delhi, India]. He has over 25 years performing and teaching experience, which includes an apprenticeship with Cicely Berry [Coach of the Royal Shakespeare Co, U.K]] teaching assignments at NSD [the National School of Drama, New Delhi] and performances and workshops in M.I.T, Yale, Stanford [USA], Kyoto Institute of performing arts Japan, Vienna Festwochen and Linz 09 Austria, Kampnagel-Hamburg, Germany, Zurich Spektakel, Switzerland etc. At present Arjun is a PhD Candidate at Monash University researching the teaching of Kathakali in Australia.

Cost: AUD 30 per introductory workshop, AUD 60 for one on one
